Walgreens is the namesake of a neighborhood drugstore founded in 1901 in Dixon, Illinois by Charles Walgreen Sr. It measured 50 feet by 20 feet. He began working in a pharmacy as a teenager after an injury to his finger prevented him from playing sports. In 1893 he moved to Chicago and, as the story goes, threw his last remaining pennies into the Chicago River so he would essentially start from nothing. By 1929, there were 525 Walgreens around the country and today there are 7,000, with another 400 or so opening each year.
