Since 1999, when the U.S. Postal Service first approved the sale of Internet postage through Stamps.com, the site has sold more than 100 million pieces of digital postage. Here's how it works: You create a Stamps.com account and are given a USPS postal meter permit. You then fund your Stamps.com account with a credit card or bank account transfer. Once that's done, you can print postage from your printer to standard-size envelopes and/or mailing labels for letters and packages that weigh five pounds or less. Download the free software or request a CD to get started. No special hardware is required. When you create an account you will receive a $5 credit along and a Stamps.com supply kit. You can then try the service risk-free for four weeks. If you continue as a customer, you will receive $10 in additional free postage the first month plus a digital scale, then another $10 in free postage the second month. Stamps.com costs $15.99 per month plus whatever postage you purchase. You can cancel at any time. Stamps.com also is licensed by the U.S. Postal Service to create and sell personalized PhotoStamps.
