Veterans Advantage is a discount membership program for military veterans from any service, active or retired, of any rank. Founded in 2001 by Scott Higgins, who served in Vietnam as a U.S. Army lieutenant, Veterans Advantage teams up with retailers to provide vets with discounts, including more than $800 in free benefits and more than $20,000 of annual savings. The annual fee is $59.95, or about $3 per month, after a free 30-day trial. Family members can then be enrolled for half price, and you can subscribe for up to five years at a time for more savings. Members get a 60-page Benefits Directory and access to phone support. Veterans Advantage uses these fees to fund its operation, as it doesn't charge companies to participate and also doesn't take advertising or government funding. Participating retailers include Amtrak, Continental Airlines, Footlocker, Dell, Greyhound, Verizon Wireless, Dollar Rent-a-Car, Overstock.com, Apple, Wendy's, Footaction USA, Target, Champs, XM Radio, Eastbay, Orvis, Eastern Mountain Sports, HBO, History, Thrifty car rental and NorthAmerican. Benefits of membership include $55,000 in travel and accident insurance, a prescription drug plan and a complimentary financial analysis.
